Para Trap5
What is Para Trap5 Shooting?
The discipline of Para Trap5 Shooting is open to athletes who have a physical impairment. Athletes or ‘shooters’ use a shotgun and 24gram cartridges to hit 25 random clay targets thrown from 5 different trap machines situated inside a bunker below ground. There are 6 shooters on a layout, standing on either one of 5 shooting positions and one waiting position. They rotate positions after each shot. Every shooter gets exactly the same 25 targets but they are presented in a random fashion. An international competition consists of 6 rounds of 25 targets, meaning that each shooter has a maximum available score of 150 clays in the qualification rounds. |

What is ClassificationClassification provides a structure for competition. Athletes competing in Para sports have an impairment that leads to a competitive disadvantage. Consequently, a system had to be put in place to minimise the impact of impairments on sport performance and to ensure the success of an athlete is determined by skill, fitness, power, endurance, tactical ability and mental focus. This system is called 'classification'.

World Shooting Para Sports (WSPS)
For your interest, many people have been working hard over the years to promote Para Clay shooting and one of the most important bodies is World Shooting Para Sports (WSPS). After two important test events in Suhl and Todi the decision was taken by the federations present to make shotgun clay target shooting a development sport for future introduction into the Paralympic Games, which at the moment only has rifle and pistol events. The first possible discipline will be Olympic Trap. WSPS have the most sophisticated classification system in the World used to decide eligibility. A lot of their research has been funded and managed by the Italian federation FITAV.
Below you will be able to see their newly developed Paralympic classifications for Olympic Trap (a similar discipline to Trap5 but it uses 15 traps in the bunker rather than 5). To best ensure an environment of fair and equal competition, Para athletes are placed in a category for competition based on their impairment. The below system is the first of its kind for clay shooting and is a great reference point for all countries who conduct Para Clay competitions.

In WSPS Shooting, there are three different sport classes for athletes with physical impairments:
PT1 - Sport Class SG-S (Trap):
Athletes with poor balance and/or trunk stability, competing from a wheelchair in a standard seated position. Athletes have an impairment in the lower limb(s), but no functional limitation in the upper limbs.
PT2 - Sport Class SG-L (Trap):
Athletes with good balance and trunk function, competing from a standing position. Athletes have an impairment in the lower limb(s), but no functional limitation in the upper limbs.
PT3 - Sport Class SG-U (Trap):
Athletes with good balance and trunk function, competing from a standing position. Athletes have an impairment in the non-shooting arm.
